HISTORY OF WEYMOUTH MUSIC BOOSTERS
The WMB was originally the Weymouth Band Parents Association WBPA. We were a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non profit organization incorporated in 2004. We primarily promoted WHS extracurricular instrumental, marching band and color guard programs. We also purchased and repaired instruments for the WHS band room. In 2014 BU Professor Dr. Nicolucci was retained to survey the status of music education at the time and to issue a thorough status report of the music department. WBPA was invited to meet with Dr. N.
Dr. N’s report called for significant changes K-12 for the Weymouth Music Department, including proposing a town-wide music parent support group. She suggested the WBPA lead the efforts to make this change, given they were the only Weymouth parent music booster group at the time.
In the summer of 2014 the organization voted to change its direction, and adopted the name Weymouth Music Boosters Association. Our goal was to eventually become a town-wide organization. We needed to 1) determine how to structure such an organization; 2) amend our bylaws; and 3: make significant changes in our own chapter to expand “horizontally” to support the chorus. We have completed the first 3 challenges.
We are now expanding “vertically”. Our goal is to have 10 Chapters, consisting of the 8 primary schools, the Middle School and the existing WHS Chapter. We have arranged the organization so each WMB Chapter can work in tandem with its school parent council until it is large enough to have an independent structure. Each Chapter is autonomous, but pursuant to the WMB By Laws, will meet annually in May to discuss our accomplishments and goals for the next school year.
